Before my first trip to Romania in 2016 I built 10 shoebox size keepsake boxes and filled them with candy, school supplies and small toys for all the children at the Finding Hope home. The boxes are made of black walnut with maple splines and a 1/4″ plywood for the tops and bottoms. The 1/4″ plywood was salvaged from a shipping crate that also has significant meaning to me. Some of the shipping marks and numbers are still visible on the finished boxes. The black walnut was salvaged, rough cut 2x4s from an old barn. I shared, with the children, a story of the old tree that had served many purposes. You can read about it here in the scribbles section.
